How To Stop Drifting

“We must, therefore, pay even more attention to what we have heard, so that we will not drift away.”  (Hebrews 2:1)

“But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News.” (Colossians 1:23) [NLT]

Two Examples of Drifters In The Bible:

David:2 One evening David got up from his bed and strolled around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing—a very beautiful woman … 4 David sent messengers to get her, and when she came to him, he slept with her. Now she had just been purifying herself from her uncleanness. Afterward, she returned home.” (2 Samuel 11:2 & 4)

Peter: 60 But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter. So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.”  (Luke 22:60-62)

Four Practices To Keep You Anchored To God:

  • Look to God’s love for your comfort.

“May Your faithful love comfort me as You promised Your servant.” (Psalm 119:76)

“Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort.”  (2 Corinthians 1:3)

  • Look to God’s word for your strength.

I am weary from grief; strengthen me through Your word.(Psalm 119:28)

  • Look to God’s will as our goal.

“I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus.”  (Philippians 3:14)

“If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.”  (Matthew 16:24)

  • Look To God’s grace as your hope.

“We have also obtained access through Him by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.” (Romans 5:2)

16 May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal encouragement and good hope by grace, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good work and word.” (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17)

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2) [NIV]
