Rooted and Built Up in Christ

6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” (Colossians 2:6-7)

Anytime you see the word “therefore” in the Bible, it means that the context becomes important. Stop and ask, what is “therefore” there for?

Four Ways To Keep Yourself From Being Duped Into Believing The Lies of the World:

  • Receive the truth.

How do we receive something? The giver is active and the receiver is passive.

“Therefore,  as you received Christ Jesus as the Lord …” (v. 6b)

We didn’t just receive Jesus, we’ve received Christ Jesus as the Lord.”

These are three distinct parts of this title:

  1. Christ means the “chosen one”.
  2. Jesus implies that He was “fully man”.
  3. Lord means to consider that person a “master” or “ruler”  of some kind.
  • Be rooted in the truth.

“… rooted and built up in him …” (v. 7a)

7 Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7-8)

  •  Walk in Him.

“…  so walk in him …” (v. 6b)

  • Abound in thanksgiving.

“… abounding in thanksgiving.” (v. 7c)
