Why Do We Need Christmas?

Genesis 3:1-24 [HCSB]

The temptation and the fall of man

Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the wild animals that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You can’t eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit from the trees in the garden. But about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God said, ‘You must not eat it or touch it, or you will die.’” (Genesis 3:1-3 [HCSB])

Lets look at what God actually said.

God made a perfect world but when sin entered into it mankind was kicked out of the garden of Eden… That was not God’s desire He wants fellowship with His creation but as we know His eyes are too pure to look on evil. (Habakkuk 1:13)

The Birth of Jesus

Luke 2:3-21 [HCSB]

Why was Jesus born?

Because there is a punishment for sin and He did not want it to fall on us. Jesus has taken our place on the cross.

Jesus had to be born to offer forgiveness of sin to mankind as the perfect sacrifice. Why the need for a perfect sacrifice? It was because the earlier, physical sacrifices Were imperfect. They could not take away the penalty for sin. So Jesus had to be born?

“For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” (Hebrews 10:4  [HCSB])

“But Jesus has now obtained a superior ministry, and to that degree He is the mediator of a better covenant, which has been legally enacted on better promises.” (Hebrews 8:6 [HCSB])

Jesus had to be born because we need a Mediator.

Knowing Jesus is the mediator between God and mankind makes it easier for us to understand that the priesthood, of the Levites, in the Old Testament, was imperfect. It was only a forerunner and a shadow of what was to come.

“This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear”. (Acts 2:32-33 [NKJV])

Without Christmas we would have no savior to cover our sin and no Holy Spirit to guide our steps.

“When you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed in Him, you were also sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.” (Ephesians 1:13 [HCSB])

“We have redemption in Him through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.” (Ephesians 1:7 [HCSB])

Jesus had to be born because He is our Redeemer the perfect Sacrifice. Since the wages of sin is death, Redemption requires the sacrificial death of the Redeemer. And Jesus freely laid down His life.
