“Rejoice always!” [HCSB] “Always be joyful.” [NLT] (1 Thessalonians 5:16 )
“For whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that we may have hope through endurance and through the encouragement from the Scriptures.” (Romans 15:4 )
Some Truths About Joy:
- Joy is here.
“ 8 In the same region, shepherds were staying out in the fields and keeping watch at night over their flock. 9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them …” (Luke 2:8-9 )
- Joy is sent.
“ 10 But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: 11 Today a Savior, who is Messiah the Lord, was born for you in the city of David. 12 This will be the sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a feeding trough.” (Luke 2:10-12 )
“ 17 After seeing them, they reported the message they were told about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.” (Luke 2:17-18 )
- Joy is a journey.
“When they saw the star, they were overjoyed beyond measure.” (Matthew 2:10 )
“… Weeping may spend the night, but there is joy in the morning.” (Psalm 30:5 )
- Joy is scary.
“Then Simeon blessed them and told His mother Mary: “Indeed, this child is destined to cause the fall and rise of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be opposed …” (Luke 2:34 )
- Joy is a difficult choice.
“ 46 And Mary said: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, 47 and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior, 48 because He has looked with favor on the humble condition of His slave. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed …” (Luke 1:46-48 )
“ 29 But she was deeply troubled by this statement, wondering what kind of greeting this could be. 30 Then the angel told her: Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.” (Luke 1:29-30 )
“… keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne.” (Hebrews 12:2 )
“I have spoken these things to you so that My joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.” (John 15:11 )
