The Faith of David

Duration:43 mins 57 secs

THE FAITH OF DAVID
October 14, 2018

Text:  1 Samuel 8-17 ; Hebrews 11:4-12

  • Faith Defined

Complete trust or confidence in someone or something.
The assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Jim describes faith as beliefs in action.
Without faith, it is impossible to please God.
Without faith, it is impossible to be saved.
Faith is our secure belief in God and that all things happen through God.

  • The Players

Samuel was a prophet and judge who lived in the 11th  century BC.
Saul was chosen as king of Israel because the people rejected God’s sovereignty.
Jesse had eight sons.
David is described as ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome.
David was skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, and the LORD is with him.

  • The Story

The two armies were camped on either side of a valley called Elah.
The Philistines were idolaters.  David referred to them as uncircumcised.
Goliath is described as six cubits and a span, or about 9 foot 9 inches tall.
Goliath mocked the men of Israel, their king, and their God for 40 days.
Saul had promised three things to whoever defeated Goliath:

  1. Great Riches.
  2. The soldier would get to marry the king’s daughter.
  3. His Father’s house would be free in Israel.
  • The Conclusion

Faith is Belief in Action.
Most people see the story of David and Goliath about courage.  If the story is about courage, then it is no longer about God, but just a cool story about some kid named David.  I see the story as being about faith.  David was focused on God.  He trusted God.  He was anointed by God and God lived in him.

“If you were arrested for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?”
