(James 3:1-12 )

“For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.” (James 3:2 )

Three reasons why I must tame my tongue:

  1. It will dictate where I go.

“When we put bits in the mouths of horses … we can turn the whole animal.” (James 3:3 )

“Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.” (James 3:4 )

  1. It can ruin what I have.

5…Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6The tongue is also a fire ...” (James 3:5-6 )

“... it sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.” (James 3:6 b)

  1. It showcases who I am.

“With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father and with it we curse men who’ve been made in God’s likeness. From the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.” (James 3:9 )

“Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.” (James 3:10 )

THE SOLUTION: T.A.M.E.

  • Think before you speak. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” (Proverbs 18:21 )
  • Ask God for help daily. “Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.” (Psalm 141:3 )
  • Modify your conduct. “Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” (Philippians 1:27 )
  • Experience a heart change. “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:31-32 )
